Grapes of Glory: A “Case” for Excellence in Virginia Wine

“Success is best when it’s shared.”–Howard Schultz

In our enchanting world of wine, every bottle holds a story, and every sip is a journey through time and terroir. As a Virginia native and a member of our unique and special community, I’m honored and proud to play a role in an industry that not only produces one of life’s most exquisite pleasures, but also fosters a deep sense of camaraderie and passion among its fellowship.

Being a part of this culture extends beyond the vineyards and cellars—it’s about embracing a lifestyle steeped in tradition, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence. It’s about cherishing moments shared over a bottle with loved ones, forging connections with enthusiasts, and continuing to deepen our understanding of this ancient elixir.

Last week, and now in its 42nd year of competition, the Virginia Governor’s Cup celebrated a long-standing tradition of winemaking excellence across the Commonwealth. With more than 750 entries, 79 producers were awarded a total of 137 gold medals. That’s quite an impressive testament to the passion and commitment to quality shining in our great state! The ceremony in Richmond proved to be an unforgettably proud evening, with October One Vineyard not only achieving a gold medal for their 2022 Albariño, but also earning a coveted spot in the Governor’s “Case,” a prized distinction awarded to the top twelve wines in Virginia!

Long before joining the O1V team, this wine and this incredible vintage held a special place in my heart, and I couldn’t be more excited to share this well-deserved accomplishment. From owners and growers Bob and Loree Rupy to vineyard manager Severino Maya Garcia, to winemakers Nate Walsh and Kent Arndt, to social media manager Jorden Humphreys, to the amazing tasting shop staff who played a role in making the dream a reality–“Cheers” to ALL of us! Limited quantities of the award-winning Albariño are still available for sipping enjoyment in the O1V tasting shop, with the recently bottled 2023 vintage soon to be released! What story THAT bottle holds remains to be told–so stay tuned, Virginia wine lovers! Congratulations to all of this year’s Governor’s Cup “Case” award recipients:
